Key Findings from Orodata Science’s Comprehensive Report
Orodata Science’s recent report, “MyPHC Report 2024,” sheds light on the pressing challenges facing primary healthcare systems across six Nigerian states: Cross River, Anambra, Benue, Osun, Sokoto, and Taraba. Despite some efforts to improve infrastructure and services, significant gaps threaten the delivery of quality healthcare to millions of Nigerians.

Challenges
Primary healthcare centres in Nigeria are facing significant challenges that hinder their ability to deliver effective healthcare services. Many facilities are in a state of disrepair, lacking essential amenities like clean restrooms and reliable power sources. This infrastructure decay, coupled with shortages of critical medical supplies, such as oxygen and PPE, severely limits emergency response capabilities and patient care.

The shortage of healthcare professionals, particularly in rural areas, leads to long wait times and compromised care quality. Additionally, a significant portion of the population struggles to afford healthcare services, limiting access and contributing to poor health outcomes. Many primary healthcare centres also lack the capacity to handle complex cases, leading to unnecessary referrals and delays in treatment.

These combined challenges pose a significant threat to the health and well-being of Nigerians. Addressing these issues requires a comprehensive approach that includes investments in infrastructure, increased access to medical supplies, improved staffing, and measures to reduce financial barriers to healthcare.

State-Specific Variations
While these challenges are common across the six states, the severity and specific areas of concern vary. For example, Osun has made more progress in infrastructure renovation compared to Sokoto. However, all states share a pressing need for urgent action.

Orodata Science calls for a multi-pronged approach to address the critical challenges facing primary healthcare in Nigeria.
